Demonstration – Using Gouache
Bruce last gave us a demonstration three years ago, in oils. This year he returns to give a demonstration in using gouache.
Bruce was born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire . He gained an Honours degree in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1978.
Inspired by painters who have worked outdoors, such as Turner, the Impressionists and lately Joan Eardley, almost all of Bruce's work is done on the spot using opaque paint methods – oil, gouache, acrylic. The opportunity to react directly to the landscape and the particular colours, textures and light of the moment is more important to him than the practical difficulties of working outside in all seasons.
Bruce has exhibited in numerous galleries across the country including: The Mall Galleries, London; Manchester Academy of Fine Arts; Leeds City Art Gallery. He also exhibits regularly at: Myton Gallery, Hull and Staithes Gallery, North Yorkshire. At Staithes Gallery he tutors residential painting weekends in July and October as part of the Staithes Art School, organised by the Gallery.
In 2007 Bruce was elected a full member of The Royal Society of Marine Artists.
